For me, photography is all about capturing the emotional impact of the subject and sharing that with others. A good photograph should draw you in. It should include details that you discover the more you look at it, and the more you look into it. Ideally, the picture should give you a sense of ‘being there’. I get excited when I’m fortunate enough to make a picture that manages to do this.
Photography is a quiet, almost meditative process for me. When an interesting subject presents itself, I get lost in the moment with a clear and open mind. Nothing extraneous intrudes, only the details of the scene before me. My primary interest is in nautical and Maine coast imagery but really, anything that strikes a chord is fair game. I enjoy exploring the depth and richness of color photography as well as the beauty of tone found in black and white work. You’ll see examples of both on this site.
I have no preconceived notions of what my pictures represent to the viewer. There is no specific question that they are intended to ask or answer. There is no right or wrong way to interpret their meaning. At the end of the day, my hope is that my photographs will provide enjoyment and enrichment. Whether they stir the imagination, make one reflect and appreciate the beauty of the world around us, or simply provide a means of relaxation and escape is entirely up to the viewer.
